Shimla: Rs 18 crore to be spent on road safety

Various government departments will spend around Rs 18 crore on road safety measures from the Himachal Pradesh Road Safety Fund this financial year.

At the first meeting of the committee headed by the Chief Secretary held here today, it was decided to grant Rs 3 crore to the Police Department for purchasing wheel clamp locks, barricades, Intelligent Transport Management System and e-challan devices. The committee would manage the Road Safety Fund.

As per the press note issued by the Transport Department, Rs 2.50 crore had been released to 135 colleges and 1,879 senior secondary schools for creating road safety clubs.

These clubs would help in making students aware of road safety rules. Besides, Rs 3 crore had been approved for IEC activities being carried out by Transport Department, and Rs 4.5 crore for buying 15 electric interceptor vehicles.
