A full-court address was held in the High Court to welcome the new Chief Justice Amjad Ahtesham Sayed, who sworn in as the 27th Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh today.
Justice Sayed said the judiciary plays a vital role in upholding constitutional values and morality and judges are under oath to impart justice to all its citizens. He stressed the delivery of easily accessible, speedy and cost-effective justice, especially to the poor and needy, for which he called upon the State and District Legal Services Authorities to identify all such litigants who deserved to be provided free legal aid.
Justice Sayed said keeping in view the pendency of cases in the courts, the priority should be given to dispose of all cases which are more than five-year old.
Justice Sabina welcomed Justice Sayed on assumption of charge of the Chief Justice. She said during Covid, the Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority took many steps to help weaker sections of society under the leadership of Justice Sayed, who was then its Executive Chairman.
She said it was a privilege for all to work under the leadership of Justice Sayed and his rich and vast experience from the Bombay High Court would certainly help in adjudicating pending civil and criminal matters.
The proceedings were conducted by the Registrar General Virender Singh.
Advocate General Ashok Sharma, Chairman of the Bar Council of HP Ajay Kochhar, president of the HP High Court Bar Association Lovneesh Kanwar and Assistant Solicitor General of India Balram Sharma also spoke.
Judges of the High Court, Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, Justice Vivek Singh Thakur, Justice Ajay Mohan Goel, Justice Sandeep Sharma, Justice Chander Bhusan Barowalia, Justice Jyotsna Rewal Dua and Justice Satyen Vaidya were also present. Justice PS Rana, Chairperson, HP State Human Rights Commission, and former judges, Justice AK Goel and Justice KC Sood, were also present.
