Vajpayee remembered on third death anniv

Shimla, August 16

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was remembered on his third death anniversary at “Punya Smaran” (holy remembrance) at Himachal Pradesh University at a function presided over by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, amidst protests by Student Federation of India (SFI) outside the venue.

Paying rich tributes to Vajpayee, the Governor said that he kindled spirit of nationalism and virtues of such a patriot must be remembered to encourage younger generations to emulate him and follow his ideals.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was working to carry forward his ideas.

Describing Vajpayee as ‘Bhagiratha’ of the modern era, Arlekar said that he tried to rid of the drought and floods through river linking projects and the Golden Quadrilateral project was aimed at connecting several industrial, cultural and agricultural cities.

Earlier, the Governor paid floral tributes at the statue of Atal Behari Vajpayee installed on the campus of the University. Education Minister Govind Singh Thakur said that Vajpayee had special attachment with Himachal and the Atal Tunnel was his gift to the state.

While the Governor and other leaders remembered Vajpayee at the functions, the SFI activists lodged protests, dubbing the event as another attempt towards saffronisation. “Never before in the history of HPU, was death anniversary of any Prime Minister observed on the campus and that people owing allegiance to the RSS and ABVP were invited to attend”.

“This day will be observed as a black day in the history of HPU for brazen attempt to organise a meeting of RSS, using official machinery and the university administration only invited persons of a particular ideology”, alleged president and general secretary of the campus unit of SFI, Vivek Raj and Rockey. —TNS
