Major landslide reported in Himachal's Kinnaur; many feared dead as vehicles trapped under debris

Several people have been feared buried as some vehicles were trapped under debris after a major landslide was reported in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district, official said.

A bus of HRTC, a truck and some other vehicles were reportedly hit by the landslide near Neugal Sari in Kinnaur district, about 170 km from here today afternoon around 12.30 pm. The driver of the bus was thrown out of the bus due to the impact of the slide. Local MLA Jagat Singh Negi said that as per the driver there were 25 passengers in the bus. The driver is in a state of shock and under treatment. "One person has been rescued," he said, adding that: "The rescue operation is hampered as shooting stones are still rolling down."

The bus was on its way from Rampur to Nichhar when the tragedy struck. The DC and SP Kinnaur were on their way to the landslide spot, which is about 70 km from district headquarter Reckong Peo.

The SP Kinnaur confirmed that landslide has occurred and that the teams of the Army, ITBP, Police and home guard have been rushed to the spot and the details of number of vehicles trapped in the slide and causalities are yet to be ascertained.

On July 25, nine people were killed and three others injured in a landslide in Kannaur. Multiple landslides had occurred near Batseri on Sangla-Chitkul road then. Heavy boulders fell on a tempo traveller carrying 11 people, killing nine and injuring two.
