The High Court yesterday dismissed the petition challenging the appointment of Dr Sikander Kumar as Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU).

Justice Sureshwar Thakur passed the judgment on a petition filed by Dharam Pal, who alleged that the appointment of Dr Sikander had not been made in accordance with the University Grants Commission Regulations, 2010, which require that a person to be appointed as VC must have an experience of 10 years as a professor or 10 years of experience on an equivalent position.

The petitioner alleged that Dr Sikander applied for the post on July 16, 2018, and was appointed as VC on August 2, 2018. The petitioner alleged that Dr Sikander misled the search committee regarding possessing the experience.

Dismissing the petition, the court observed, "The petitioner has not levelled any allegation or malafides against the members of the search committee. Consequently, when the search committee is taint-free, its expertise in making the selection is unquestionable, nor its opinion can be substituted by the court."
