Shimla, August 23

The Central Government has sought the details of the impact of the order declaring monkeys as vermin, as only five simians were killed in the state in the past five years, according to Forest Department records.

The Himachal Government has sought the extension of the earlier order of the Central Government declaring monkeys as vermin to enable their scientific culling. As per the Forest Department records, only five monkeys have been killed as people avoid killing them for religious and other purposes. However, there have been instances when groups of monkeys were found dead after having been poisoned.

"We will be responding to the observations made by the Union Ministry of Forest and Environment so that the order declaring monkeys as vermin can be extended," said Archana Sharma, Chief Wildlife Warden and Principal Chief Conservator (Wildlife). She added that the December 2019 census showed a decline in the population of monkeys indicating that the strategy of the state had been helpful.

As per the December 2019 census, the population of monkeys is about 1.36 lakh. She said that the monkey menace still persists in some areas such as Shimla city and there was need to declare them as vermin for some more time.
